Student Proves Everyone Can Prevent Child Abuse
A student at Central Decatur High School in the Mass Communications class is taking part in a class
project where each student has been given $10.00 to change the world. Ashley Fox has decided to use
her $10.00 to change the world for children right here in our area that are being or are at risk of being
abused.
Ashley has made a beautiful blanket and is accepting donations for child abuse prevention. All of those
who donate will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win the blanket that Ashley has made. Her
proceeds from the project she will give to Positive Parenting, Inc., the local child abuse prevention agency,
to help prevent child abuse locally.
When Ashley told Cassie Lynch, Executive Director of Positive Parenting, Inc. about her project, Cassie
was thrilled. "Child abuse is something we as a society do not like to think about. It is very painful to learn
about an innocent child being abused. We also tend to think those kinds of things don't happen here...but
they do. Each of the four counties in our service area is among the top 15 for the highest rate of child
abuse in at least one child abuse category," Cassie states. She goes on to say "Child abuse prevention is
historically under-funded. We like to give our resources to projects that have a positive impact. We'd like
everyone to remember that a child growing up free from abuse has one of the most positive impacts on
the world that we could ever hope for."
Ashley has done several articles on Positive Parenting, Inc. through her work on the school newspaper, so
she is well aware that child abuse is totally preventable. For that reason, she has decided to change the
world by changing lives for children right here at home. After all of the donations are in Ashley will meet
with Cassie to decide exactly how she would like the donations to benefit children locally.
The blanket that Ashley has made will be displayed throughout the Positive Parenting, Inc. service area.

happen. YOU can help lower those numbers and protect the children in this community.
Positive Parenting, Inc. is bringing Darkness to Light’s Stewards of Children program to this community.
Stewards of Children is a revolutionary, research-based sexual abuse prevention training program
developed by Darkness to Light. Stewards of Children educates adults to prevent, recognize, and react
responsibly to the epidemic of child sexual abuse.
Stewards of Children is available in two formats: In person and Online. Organizations that would like to
schedule an in-person training, should contact Positive Parenting, Inc. at ppinced@grm.net or by phone at
641-446-3113. An authorized facilitator is available to come to your organization to conduct the training.
The facilitator is also equipped to consult with your organization about child protection policies and
procedures. For the online version of the training, visit www.positiveparentinginc.org to link to the online
training site.
Adults who participate in Stewards of Children training will learn how sexual abuse affects communities
nationwide. They will learn about the long-term and often devastating effects that sexual abuse has on
individuals. Most importantly, participants will leave with simple, proactive strategies for protecting children
from sexual abuse.
Only 10% of child sexual abuse cases are committed by strangers; 90% of these incidents involve an adult
known by the child and/or the child’s family. This is a chilling statistic, but one that cannot be ignored.
As adults, it is our responsibility to protect the children in our community from sexual abuse so that they
can grow up to lead healthy productive lives. They are our most precious resource.
