| Our History |
Positive Parenting, Inc. began as a Decatur County effort in 1985. At that time we had a part time
coordinator who, while working out of her own home, provided parent education services using the
Nurturing Program, sexual abuse prevention services using the Happy Bear curriculum, a home visit
program for new parents and a young parent's support group. Our funding that first year was $1,122.50.
In 1995 (fiscal year 1996) we reached out to provide sexual abuse prevention services in adjoining Wayne
and Ringgold counties with the Happy Bear curriculum. Both counties became fully involved with Positive
Parenting, Inc. with council representation, increased programming and funding in 2000 (fiscal year 2001).
In 2004 (fiscal year 2005), Clarke County became the fourth county to become part of our council and
service area.
Today, we display a much more involved picture. We receive over $150,000 to provide child abuse
prevention services for over 5,300 children and 15,500 adults. We have a professional staff of five
dedicated, passionate employees. Our office is easily accessible with a friendly, supportive atmosphere.
Some things have never changed. We strive to provide much needed services while maintaining the
strictest standards in regards to local, state and federal compliance. We consider our ethics, morals and
values to be of the utmost importance.
Most importantly since our beginning, we have had the vision of ending child abuse in
south central Iowa. That vision will never change.
...because it shouldn't hurt to be a child.
